Baldur’s Gate 3 Dev Is Working Toward An RPG That “Dwarfs” It

Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios blew our collective mind with the sheer scale and depth in its role-playing masterpiece, but the studio has plans for a game so gargantuan, it may very well make Baldur’s Gate 3 look tiny.

Prior to development on Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian CEO Swen Vincke was already planning out the company’s future, and this included what he calls “the very big RPG that will dwarf them all.”

Speaking to GameSpot at GDC, Vincke explained that Larian’s next game also won’t actually be the aforementioned “very big RPG,” but will be another step toward realizing it.

“I think there is some tech that we don’t have yet,” Vincke said. “And I don’t know what the specs are on the next gen [of gaming systems] yet, but I hope that it’s going to bring us closer.”

A game so large it makes Baldur’s Gate 3 look like a halfling’s mid-morning snack sounds almost unfathomable, perhaps to the point that you’d need to take a lengthy work sabbatical in order to finish it. Just what Vincke and the rest of the Larian team have in store for such a game remains to be seen, but it’s clear that for what we consider a “very big RPG” in 2024, the studio is doing a pretty damn good job.
