The One Show suffers live blunder after guests get stuck in a lift

The One Show suffered a live blunder during Wednesday’s (December 13) episode when both celebrity guests were late to set… because they were stuck in a lift.

Co-hosts Alex Jones and Ronan Keating had to explain that they’d be cutting to a video segment instead of chatting to the guests at the normal time, as both Stephen Fry and Sheridan Smith were trapped in a lift together.

“Now then, we are having a night here. Because Stephen Fry and Sheridan Smith are due on the sofa. Obviously, it’s a live programme. They are stuck in a lift. So for the time being, we will go onto a film,” Alex admitted.

Ronan then shared that both Stephen and Sheridan were doing “fine”, adding: “Hopefully they will be here before the end of the show.”

The duo cut to a video piece, after which Stephan and Sheridan (thankfully!) appeared on the sofa. And it seemed like they had a sense of humour about the whole thing, too.

Sheridan put her hand over her mouth while giggling about the incident, while Stephen quipped: “Santa’s sleigh ride got a little stuck.”

After showing a photo of the two smiling while trapped together, the BBC show carried on as usual, with Stephen promoting his Jeopardy UK hosting gig and Sheridan chatting about her new series, The Castaways.

At the end of the show, though, Alex couldn’t help but apologise for the awkward moment that delayed the twosome’s interview.

“So sorry for your experience,” she joked.

Being a live nightly show, this, of course, isn’t the first time The One Show has suffered a live blunder. Back in 2021, guest Paddy McGuinness accidentally swore on air, while Alex had to apologise after getting the giggles on air a few weeks later.

More recently, Alex made a mix-up live on the show when she confused Asa Butterfield and Daniel Mays’ acting credits.

Never a dull moment!

The One Show airs on BBC One.
