Young Sheldon sequel will have biggest connection to Big Bang Theory yet

As the Cooperverse expands with a new Young Sheldon sequel series, fans will get their biggest connection to The Big Bang Theory yet.

Young Sheldon might be coming to an end, but the Cooper family’s reign of the small screen isn’t finishing anytime soon. In fact, another Big Bang Theory spinoff will be landing in the near future, and it’s also serving as a Young Sheldon sequel.

Technically, this would make it the middle-man in a trilogy of Sheldon tales. Except, there’s a catch: it’s not actually about Sheldon at all. The newest Big Bang-related series will focus on Georgie and Mandy and their life as a young married couple and parents to Ceecee.

Everyone expected this particular spinoff, but there’s one element that sets it apart from Young Sheldon — and perhaps makes it the closest thing to The Big Bang Theory so far.

Young Sheldon sequel will be a multi-cam series, just like The Big Bang Theory

Alongside the news that CBS had picked up the Young Sheldon sequel, it was also noted that the new series would be filmed in a multi-camera format, just as The Big Bang Theory was.

The multi-camera format is one that classic comedy shows of the ’80s and ’90s (like Friends and Seinfeld) preferred to use. The Big Bang Theory was one of the last mega-hit series to be shot like this alongside a live-studio audience. As the format goes, the actors and scenes are typically on a sound stage, captured by a line of cameras in front of a crowd.

Young Sheldon, notably, used a single-camera format instead, which allowed it to play out scenes in more dramatic ways. It also gave the production opportunity to explore different settings and changes in Sheldon’s life. With the new series ditching this previously established technique, this makes it more similar to the original series than the prequel.

While fans were initially unhappy with this change, it might hint towards a shift in gear for the younger era of Coopers. With a multi-cam format, sequel series will likely play in a more classical comedy style. It may even have a bigger family focus like popular shows of its kind, such as Full House and Family Ties.

While it might not be enough to revive the multi-cam sitcom altogether, it certainly acts as a major callback to The Big Bang Theory, the show that started it all.
